Five places to stay with the crowd and see the game

Remember 2006, the last time your Detroit Tigers were in the baseball playoffs?  It seemed as if most of Southeast Michigan was downtown, filling up any available nook or cranny near Comerica Park.

With this year’s incredible final push by the Tigers to get into the playoffs, fans have enjoyed a few weeks of knowing that our team will be playing meaningful baseball games in October.  From what we’ve been hearing, that extra time has been put to good use getting ready to enjoy time around the stadium.  Places like Cheli’s Chili Bar, the Park Bar, Town Pump Tavern, Bookies and Hockeytown Cafe are close to the stadium and will be filled with baseball fans pulling for the Tigers to make it into the next round.

If you want to be close to the action and want an alternative to the big crowds, we’ve got these five suggestions for you.

1.  Nemo’s – A Detroit Classic

It should be called a Corktown classic too!  Before the Tigers moved to Comerica Park, Nemo’s was the place to go before and after your trip to Tiger Stadium.  After the move, they bought a few buses to cater to the fans who love Nemo’s and still want to get to Tigers games.  If you’re looking for hardcore Tigers fans, you’ll find them here.

2.  Sweetwater Tavern

For some reason, wings seem to be the perfect food for watching a sporting event.  Sweetwater has some of the best wings in the city, plenty of TV’s so you can watch the game where ever you sit and is close to the Bricktown People Mover station in case you want to pay the 75 cents to ride up to the stadium.

3.  La Casa De La Habana

Cigar aficionados like baseball too, this is why Comerica Park has their own cigar lounge.  If you aren’t lucky enough to have access to that lounge, La Casa is a short walk from the ballpark.  From hand-rolled cigars to a great whiskey selection, this is a great choice for those who want to kick back with a stogie while watching another Tigers victory.

4.  Anchor Bar

This is a great stop for Red Wings games too because it’s close to the Joe Louis Arena and a People Mover station.  Grab yourself an Ahva burger and thank us later, especially if you like a good greasy burger with ham and Swiss cheese!

5.  Grand Trunk Pub

Be warned, this place will be packed and getting a good seat near a television can be tough.  This made our list for their fantastic menu, an exquisite Michigan beer selection and the fact that the TV never turns away from a Tigers game in this place, regardless of how the Tigers are doing.  And its location makes it easy to join the celebration when the Tigers win!

According to Inside Detroit, there are more than 130 bars and restaurants within one square mile of Downtown.  So, which is your favorite place to enjoy a Tigers victory?
